HOLLINGSWORTH, Jean Mae ( nee Ross) -

Passed away peacefully with family by her side at Lakeridge Health, Port Perry on Friday February 29th, 2008 at the age of 86. Jean lived most recently in the Court of Brooklin, and previously in Ashburn of the last 45 years.  Beloved wife of the late Samuel Hollingsworth ( 1993).  Loving and cherished mother of David ( Nona Lupenec), Dennis, D'Arcy, Martha (Hugh Dodd) and Paul.

Lovingly remembered by her six grandchildren Kristen and Matthew Hollingsworth, Hillary and Warren Dodd, Aliya Hollingsworth and Megan Hollingsworth.

Resting at MEMORIAL CHAPEL BROOKLIN, 5295 Thickson Rd. N. Brooklin/Whitby from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, and Monday from 11:00 am until time of service to follow in the chapel at 1:00 0'Clock.  Interment, GROVESIDE CEMETERY, Brooklin.  If desired memorial donations to the Children's Wish Foundation would be appreciated.



MARTIN, Robert Henry (Bob) -

Our wonderful Dad, Grandpa and Great-Grandpa, Bob Martin, passed from this life to join his beloved wife Emma, on February 29, 2008, at the age of 89.  He leaves behind a devoted family: Nancy (Doug), David (Florence) and Cathy (Gord); his grandchildren Martin (Brenda), Mike (Melanie), Paul (Sandra), Janet, Peter, and Jacqueline (Jeremy), his great-grandchildren Sarita, Nigel, Lucy and Allyanna.  Bob was well known as a traditional handyman whose craftsmanship and skills were generously applied to helping a wide circle of family and friends in his community. He was a gentleman who was proud of his family and will be sorely missed by them and by those many people whose lives he has touched.  The family wish to thank the staff at West Shore Residence and that of Aurora Resthaven for their attentive care and for their support of both Bob and his family.

Passed away on Friday, February 29th, 2008 at home in Whitby, in his 73rd year after a courageous battle with cancer. Dearest husband and high school sweetheart of Dianne for 52 years.  Wonderful father to his son Scott (Sharon), and to his daughter Brenda (Robert) Rass.  Cherished Poppa to Bradley, Haley, Briana and David.  George was a dedicated State Farm agent for 40 years prior to his retirement in 1999.

(Supervisor of Maintenance for the York Region Public School Board)  Passed away peacefully at Hyland Crest Senior Citizens Home, Minden on Friday, February 29, 2008. in his 91st year.  Beloved husband of the late Anna (nee Kraschinski).  Dear father of Uta Cachia of Holland Landing, Brigitte and her husband Case Bassie of Minden.  Loving Opa of Tim Cachia, Joanne Draper, Jillian Bassie and great-grandchildren Annica Draper, Christopher and Rachel Cachia.

After a long courageous battle with a challenging illness, Steven suddenly passed away on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at the age of 29.  Beloved fiancé and best friend of Lisamaria Akeson.  Dear son of John Gale(Dale McLaughlin) and Crystal Peleshok (Erwin Waldinsperger). Beloved brother of Andrea and cherished grandson of Gladys Gale (late Jack) and the late Steve and Rose Peleshok. He will be sadly missed by Greg and Sheena Akeson and the Akeson Family and by his many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Suddenly at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on Wednesday February 27, 2008 in her 82nd year.  Ruby, beloved wife of the late Mervin.  Loving mother of Barbara and her husband Paul Stephens, Brian and his wife Carol, Patricia and her husband Dave Black, and Darlene and her husband Denis Marion.  Fondly remembered by her 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

SAWYER, Duane Durland -

It is with great sadness that the family announces Duane's passing from a long illness, on Wednesday February 27th, 2008.  Beloved husband and soul-mate of Sharon (nee Manser) for 43 years.  Proud and loving father of David (Lauren), Amy (Rob), Daniel and Becky.  Adoring grandfather of Austin, Nora and Addison. Brother of Richard (deceased), Kevin, Barry and Lori.  Pre-deceased by his parents Doris and Durlie.  Duane will be sadly missed by many family members and friends.  Duane was born in Belleville, April 25, 1946. He started his working career on the G.M. assembly line at sixteen years old.  Duane then moved on to selling cars and eventually owned his own car dealership (Enterprise Ford).  He also traveled across North America as a dealer consultant (Sawyer Management Systems).  He loved children of all ages and coached girls hockey and boys and girls soccer.  He earned his black belt in karate and taught karate at his own club.  He was interested in philosophy all his life and wrote a book on his own life philosophy.  He loved the outdoors, especially Algonquin Park.  Duane was widely known for his positive attitude, love of life and wicked sense of humour.  Many thanks to the doctors, nurses and staff of the SMDU unit at WMHC and Sunnycrest Nursing Home for their patience, care and understanding.  Cremation has taken place.  A memorial to celebrate Duane's life will be held on Sunday March 16th, 2008 from 2 PM to 5 PM at the Canadian Corps. Located at 142 Athol Street in Oshawa.  In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to the Eastview Boys and Girls Club.  Duane will be interned in Whitney, ON - his most favourite place on Earth.



VAN NIEUWENHOVE, Sharlene -

Peacefully at Uxbridge Cottage Hospital on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 in her 65th year.  Beloved wife of the late Ed. Loving mother of Lisha and her husband Brian and Scott and his wife Joanne. Wonderful Nana to Ivy, Maja, Paige, Allison, and Sara.  Predeceased by her parents Charles and Jean Nobes.  Sharlene was an active member of the Uxbridge Cottage Hospital Ladies Auxiliary and she was a member of Beta Sigma Phi.  In lieu of flowers, donations to Uxbridge Cottage Hospital Foundation would be appreciated.

Suddenly, on Tuesday, February 26, 2008.  Don, in his 73rd year.  Loving brother of Helen Knox and her husband Walter of Oshawa and the late Edna Gilhooly.  Dearly remembered by nephews Rick Price (Kim) and Dave Price (Sherida).  Special cousin to Marion and Eppi Luchies and family.

Retired employee of G M (34 years).  Bert passed away at Lakeridge Health Oshawa on February 26th, 2008 at the age of 64.  Loving husband to Ann.  Dear father of Angie and Gary (Karla).  Step-daddy to Rick (Sheri), Christine (Greg), Linda (Rick).  Grandfather of 2 and step-grampa of 11.  Brother of 6 siblings.  Son of Joe and Rose Kesckes.  Predeceased by his father Wilfred Grant.  Best buddy to his dog Brutus.

Peacefully, on Monday, February 25, 2008 at the Lakeridge Health Centre in Port Perry, at age 83.  Gordon Coupland of Little Britain, beloved husband of Sheila (nee Kenyon).  Loved father of Gail and her husband Dean Dalgleish of Kingston, Stephen Coupland and his wife Janice of Clarington, and David Coupland and his wife Kathy of Bowmanville. Gordon will also be missed by his 8 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and his sister Valda Barker in England.

Dear mother of Rob Ewington, William Ewington and Ann Marie, and the late David Ewington.  Cherished grandmother of Johnathan Fielding, Rhianna Ewington, Mellissa Ewington and Robin Ewington.  She will be missed by her sister Betty and Charles Collins, nieces Lyndy, Joanne, Dee Dee, Donna, Merla, Kim, Carol, Ed, Mark, Rick, Butch, Gail, Pam, Wilkie and June.  Predeceased by brothers Jack, Doug and sister Marg.  Great aunt of Dustin, Korbyn and Layla.

FRALICK, Ivah Norine (Milner) - 

Peacefully passed away on Monday, February 25, 2008, in her 93rd year, at the Extendicare residence in Mississauga.  Ivah, of Scugog Island, devoted wife of the late Cecil Fralick.  Dear mother of Linda, Dianne (Jim Young), Sylvia (Brian Weber). Beloved grandmother of Chris, Taira (Mike Milan), Quinn, Adam (Joy Potter), Derek, Marc and great grandmother to Stephanie and Dylan.  She will be deeply and sadly missed by her loving family and all who had the pleasure of knowing this lovely, sweet lady.  Sincere thanks to the doctors, nurses, administrators, personal support workers and staff at Extendicare Mississauga for providing her with a happy, comfortable and good quality of life.  In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made by cheque to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario or the Spinal Cord Research Centre.



GILMOUR, Anthony Roger “Tony” – 

(Tony coached the Harmony Pee Wee Hockey Team in the early 70’s and was very involved with Connaught Park Sports Programs, Oshawa as Coach and Sports Chairman in the 70’s and 80’s) – at home peacefully on Monday, February 25, 2008 in his 62nd year, with loving wife, Gail, devoted daughter Lisa and dear friend Colin by his side. 

Loving father of daughter, Diane (Ken), sons, Stephen (Lisa) and Brett (Angela).  Proud granddad of Alyssa, Bianca, Christina, Justin, Logan, Nathaniel, Carter, Jordan and Breana.  Tony is survived by brothers, Steve (Pat) and Alan. Predeceased by parents William and Mary, brother Billy, mother-in-law Dorothy Jardine, and brother-in-law Dan Jardine. Tony had a special place in the hearts of his cousins, Nancy (Ken), Gary (Deb), Shelley (Dave), Colin and their families. He will be sadly missed by many friends and relatives in Canada and overseas. 

Many thanks to Dr. Kevin Luces and his staff, Dr. A. Kassirer, Sylvia James, Pat Gray, Delize Roberts and Natalie Carter who took such good care of Tony as well as the Doctors and staff at the Cancer Centre.  Cremation has taken place. 

A memorial service will be held at CHRIST THE KING LUTHERAN CHURCH, 1825 Manning Rd., Whitby (corner of Manning and Scott) to celebrate Tony’s life on Saturday, March 8, 2008 at 11:00 a.m.  In lieu of flowers, donations in Tony’s memory to The R.S. (34-year employee of Sears Canada; part-time custodian with the Separate School Board) – after a brief illness at St. Michael’s Hospital, Toronto, on Sunday, February 24, 2008, in his 59th year.  Beloved husband of Sallie Martin of Newcastle.  Dear father of Paul (Cheryl), Jay, Karen, and step-father of Emma (Craig).  Loving Grandpa of Dawson, Kartor; Angelica, Ashton; and Britney.  Brother of Clare (Brenda).  Doug will be remembered by his nieces Amber and Erin and his extended family and friends.  The family would like to extend a sincere thank you to the nurses and physicians at both Lakeridge Health Bowmanville, Special Care Unit, and St. Michael’s Hospital M.S. CHARLAND, George Patrick -

(May 15, 1937 - February 23, 2008)  With the greatest dignity and respect, surrounded with the love of his family, George’s life journey came to completion following a courageous three year battle with cancer.  Beloved husband of Ruth of 20 years, cherished Dad of Mark and his wife Lisa, Marcel, Michael John, Maurice and his wife Elizabeth, Murray (predeceased), step-son Paul and his wife Erika, and Brian and his fiancée Amy.  Loving brother of Leona, Therese, Eva, Roland, Emile and step-brother Bruce, predeceased by sister Pat and brother John.  Fondly remembered by his grandchildren Marisa, Logan, Zzachry and Emilia.

George retired from General Motors on March 4, 1996 following 31 years of service.  He remained an active member of St. Joseph the Worker Parish and was a proud Fourth Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus Council 9989. He enjoyed working with wood and spent many quiet retirement hours in his workshop creating his own unique wooden masterpieces.

George touched the hearts of all he met and will be sadly missed but never forgotten.  Family and friends will be received at ARMSTRONG FUNERAL HOME, 124 King Street East, Oshawa on Wednesday, Feb. 27th from 2-4 and 7-9 pm.  Prayers at 7:30pm. Kenneth Blackman, of Ajax, formerly of Guyana, died on Thursday, February 21, 2008 at Rouge Valley Health Centre, Ajax.  Ken leaves behind his beloved wife Linda, and his eight children, Kenneth O'Neil of Cote d'Ivore, Africa, Jewel Cumberbatch of Ajax, Alison Gunther of Georgia, Karen Mills, Dale Williams, Kenneth Owen Jr., and Marcia Langaigne, all of Maryland, and Nigel of Scarborough. Beloved grandfather of sixteen.  Brother of the late Clement and his wife Evelyn, the late Fredrick and his wife Henrietta, and the late Rose Hendricks, and the late Agnes Miller.  He was the loving uncle, cousin, and friend to many.  If desired, donations made in memory of K.O.B. can be made to the Rouge Valley Health Centre, Ajax Pickering Site and would be appreciated by his family.

1927-2008  (Former President of Local 222 U.A.W. 1963-1978, Board of Directors Chair for Oshawa Senior Citizens’ Centre and Parkview Place, Board of Directors rep. at Oshawa General Hospital, Oshawa Public Utilities Commissioner, President of Residents’ Council at the Wynfield Longterm Retirement Home).

Surrounded by love in the presence of his family, Abe passed away peacefully on February 21st, 2008 at Lakeridge Health Oshawa.  He faced his medical and physical challenges with great courage, determination and dignity.  Beloved husband of Joan (nee Brockman) for 57 years.  Cherished father of his daughter Joan of Oshawa and son Alan and his wife Betty and grandson Keith of Kamloops, B.C.  Devoted brother to sisters Pearl Badour, Lil McEachern, Barbara Smith and her husband Ted, Joyce Wilde and her husband Don and sister-in-law Marion Taylor.  Predeceased by brother Fred Taylor and sisters Shirley Johnson, Vi Brown, Tillie Russell and brothers-in-law Bill Badour, Arn McEachern, Gord Brown, Bob Russell and Ray Brockman.  Abe is survived by many nieces and nephews in the Oshawa area. 

Special thanks to “Abe’s angels” at the Wynfield-his personal caregivers who brought him joy and made a difficult transition more acceptable.  Thanks to the extraordinary teams of nurses, doctors and technicians from Emerg, 7M, 3F and 9th floors at Lakeridge Health Oshawa for their valiant efforts on Abe’s behalf in recent months.

COOK, Jean (née Chalmers) -

After a long and happy life well lived, peacefully, at Hillsdale Estates on Tuesday, February 19, 2008, in her 96th year.  Predeceased by her beloved husband of more than 50 years, Bill Cook (1990).  Will be greatly missed by daughter Barbara and her husband George Stewart, grandson Bill Stewart and granddaughter Cindy and her husband James Stewart-Haass.  Jean is the last of her family, having been predeceased by all of her eleven siblings, including Alex Chalmers and Ella Chalmers (both of Oshawa). 

Jean was born in Largs, Scotland and emigrated to Canada with her family in 1923.  She graduated as a Registered Nurse after training at the Whitby Psychiatric Hospital.  Jean worked for many years at Oshawa General Hospital, then the Oshawa Clinic before retirement.  Jean and Bill enjoyed over 23 years of happy retirement. 

Our heartfelt thanks go to Dr. McIntosh and all the nurses and staff of the Maple Grove Wing at Hillsdale Estates.  All of you, and her friends, truly made this her happy home for the past three years.  Your special care and kindness over the last month, to Jean and her family, was much appreciated.

PARROTT, Frederick -

(1935 – 2008)  Surrounded by family at Oshawa General Hospital’s palliative care unit, Fred Parrott passed away Tuesday, February 19 after a courageous battle with cancer.

A graduate of St. Michael’s Choir School, De LaSalle Oakland and University of Toronto, Fred has touched many lives in his career as an educator for 33 years,  including principalships at Ajax and Anderson High Schools and Continuing Education. 

Fred’s love of music leaves a legacy, including: starting the Saint Anthony’s Men’s Choir at the age of sixteen, which he led for 10 years, arranging music and singing with “The Spotlighters” quartet and directing several musicals at Ajax High.

Fred was best friend and loving husband to Genevieve with whom he celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in September 2007. 

Many will miss him but celebrate his life including his five children Patty/Steve, Michelle/Ken, John/Christine,  Stephen/Melanie and Cathy.  Fred was an extremely proud grandfather.  His ten  grandchildren Amanda, Danielle, Nichole, Elizabeth, Melissa, Sammantha, Jake, Ehvan, Julia and Mitchell will miss their Poppy with whom he shared so much.

Friends will be received for visitation, February 21st, at W.C. TOWN FUNERAL CHAPEL, 110 Dundas Street East Whitby, Ontario 2:00 – 4:00, 7:00 – 9:00.  Funeral Mass will be held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church,  903 Gifford Street, Whitby Friday, February 22nd at 10:00 am.  In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit of Oshawa General Hospital or RVHS Ajax Pickering Hospital Foundation.

Noreen was a positive, energetic and loving person who gave her time generously to the community of Oshawa.  She was a Brownie and Girl Guide leader, and was actively involved in the Daughters of Isabella and the Catholic Women’s League.  She was a founder of Information Oshawa and, as a Chaplain at Oshawa General Hospital, gave countless hours of comfort to patients and their families.  A very creative person, in her spare time she enjoyed painting and writing.

After a courageous battle with cancer, Angelina passed away on Sunday February 18, 2008 at home, peacefully, with her family by her side.  She will be sadly missed by her loving husband Tullio of 49 years, who fondly referred to her as "Lilli", her cherished daughters, Lisa, Anna, Maria and son-in-law, Mark and dearest grandchildren, Justine, Micaela, Lucas & Noah, who knew and loved her as "Nana".  Her precious little "Patches" will also miss her presence.  Angelina will always be remembered for her strength, courage and determination and will remain in our hearts forever.

(42 year teacher Durham District School Board)  June 28, 1944 – February 18, 2008  With dignity and surrounded by the love of her family Leita passed away on February 18, 2008 at Lakeridge Health Corp. Oshawa.  Leita has gone to Heaven to be with our parents Kathleen and W. Keith Smith and her infant niece Sarah.  Leita will be sadly missed but never forgotten by her best friend and sister Sherry Smith-Hettle.  She took great pride and joy as a devoted Aunt to Phillip Payne (Jen), Bronwynn Payne (Kyle) and Tyler Smith-Hettle.  Great Aunt to Caidence Payne, Eden Dam and Hunter Dam.  Special Godmother to Marianne (Jeff) Leslie and Jonathan Leslie.  Leita’s love and dedication to her students over her teaching career at Sunset Heights P.S. and Harmony Heights P.S. could never be doubted.  When anyone asked if she had children she would answer “Definitely an entire classroom full”.  She touched so many and inspired all to achieve their goals.  Leita lives on in every student she has taught.

Suddenly at Ross Memorial Hospital, Lindsay, on Friday, February 15, 2008.  Bertha, in her 87th year.  Beloved wife of the late Tahvo Loyska.  Loving mother of Aila Knight and Joe Paroczai of Oshawa, Anne and Michael Smith of Janetville and Allan Loyska of Oshawa.  Loving grandmother of Christy and her husband Brad Steward, Jeffery and his wife Catherine Smith.  Cherished G.G. to Phoebe, Paige and Kahale.  Survived by her sister Vilma Ahonen of Helsinki, Finland.  Predeceased by four sisters and three brothers.

MURPHY, George Edward (Ted) - 

Passed away on Friday, February 15, 2008 in his 81st year.  Loving husband for 56 years of Barbara (nee Kelly) of Uxbridge.  Dear father of Maureen (Bob) Greenwood, Dan (Karen), Greg (Claudia), Ross (the late Laura), Patrick (Sue), Christine (Dave) Bass, Colin (Lyne), and Tom. Proud Grandfather of Andrew (Candy), Chris, Caitlin, James, Sean, Lia, Caroline, Emily, Quinn, Vaughan, Sibeal, Justin, Jonathan, Ellie, Conor, Emmett, Morgan, Michelle, Janine, Alyse, Liana, Ryan, Fraser, Karin, Sam, Duncan, and Eamon.  Dear brother of Margaret Davies, the late Jack, Jack (the late Kay), the late Gen Poole (Laurie), Jim (Sheila), the late Win, the late Paul (Deira), and Lawrence (Catherine). Will be missed in bridge and curling circles and by his many other friends.  He had a special place in his heart for the Banh and Hingert families.  He contributed generously to several family related charities.  Ted led a full life surrounded by family at his farm and cottage and enjoyed 50 years as a Chartered Accountant.  We would like to thank the Uxbridge Cottage Hospital and Bloomington Cove for their kind care and support.  A private family mass has taken place.  A memorial service will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ted's memory to the Alzheimer Society of Durham. 



SMEGAL, Stanley Thomas -

(43 years employed at Bell Canada)  Passed away suddenly at the Lakeridge Health – Oshawa on Friday, February 15th, 2008 in his 85th year.  Stanley beloved husband of Shirley (nee McAvoy).  Dear father of Brian (Debra), Karen (Rolfe), Paul, Kim (Joe) David (Julie), Teresa (Mark), Mark (Linda), Todd (Shelley).  Cherished grandfather of 24 grandchildren.  Survived by his brother Frank (Shirley).  Predeceased by his brother John, Walter, Steve, Ben and his sister Mary.  Stanley will be missed by many nieces, nephews, friends and extended family.

TAYLOR Susan Rudden - 

Passed away peacefully at Midland Hospital on Friday, February 15th, 2008 at the age of 80.  Susan courageously fought a long battle with breast cancer.  Beloved wife of the late Harold Taylor.  Loving mother to William (Cathy), Catherine (Al), Brian (Ginny) and Gary (Angela).  Proud grandmother to Tammy (Moe), Carrie (Dave), Todd, Craig (Tonya), Blaine (Kim), Eric (Michelle), Greg (Nadine), Jen (Kevin), Jeff (Kaie), as well as many great grandchildren. Susan was born in Glasgow, Scotland and met Harold during WWII.  They married and moved to Canada where they started a family.  They eventually made their home in Pickering Beach where they raised their 4 children.  They later bought a chicken farm in Collingwood, where they happily created more memories with their children and grandchildren.  Susan's strength and unwavering resolve will be admired and remembered by her many family and friends.

VIPOND, Gloria Ruth (Glo) -

(Bar Steward Royal Canadian Legion, Brooklin for 23 years)  Passed away at Lakeridge Health, Oshawa on Friday February 15th, 2008 in her 66th year.  Dearly loved wife of Donald (Sully) Vipond. Much loved mother of Laurie and her husband Jon Blyth of Myrtle and Debbie Vipond and her partner Wes Manuel of Brooklin. Grandma of  Blaine.  Survived by her brother Larry  Ferguson and his wife Linda  and her sister Sandra Hewitt and her husband Ed all of Peterborough.  Fondly remembered by nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.
